Getting a Job vs starting a Business
“The nature of wealth creation is a game of time..."
-Adnan Saani
One day as I was going through the comments under one of my videos in which I was advising my viewers to get a job and not quit their jobs to rush into business, I came across a remark that captured my attention. The person wrote that he likes my advice but what discourages him from my advice is the fact that I encourage people to look for jobs, which according to him is "bad advice".
So, from the nature of his question I assumed that he might be a wealthy person. But the content in that particular video and in all my videos in fact, is destined for the majority of the viewers who have nothing. This content is for those who are starting from nothing.
One thing that we always have to keep in mind is that, the nature of wealth creation is a game of time. If you notice one of the major differences between rich people and poor people is that rich people think long-term. They are always thinking in terms of 10 or 15 or even 20 years from now. Meanwhile poor people are always thinking short-term; how to survive here and now, they do not even think about tomorrow but just today because it is hard for them to project themselves in the future.
Do you know why rich people are always thinking long-term? It is because they are not hungry today. That is why you will notice that when I make my videos I am always saying "10 years from now, 15 years from now, five years from now." That is because I am NOT hungry today. But when I was hungry I was not even thinking about tomorrow.
So, it is a very important distinction to make. It is hard to convince someone who is barely surviving now, hardly making ends meet every month, struggling to eat for the day that they should be thinking about 10 years or 20 years from now. Therefore, the way to get desperation out of the way is to have a job that should procure them a monthly salary to cater for their daily needs.
Now, the problem is that most Africans have been sold the dream that even if you have nothing, you can go from having zero today, to having everything else tomorrow. Instead of concentrating on getting a job right now so that you can get desperation and lack out of the way, and take time in the right industry to build yourself up. People think they can start a business any day or get into any business at any given moment and immediately the business will blossom then they can become wealthy, just like that!
However, anybody who has had money, anybody who has built some wealth knows this fact, that except if you are going to steal it, otherwise it is a game of time. It takes 5, 10, 15 or sometimes 20 years to build wealth. No one is going to build wealth in just a day or a week or a month.
So, if you are reading this article and you intend to be somebody wealthy one day, except if you intend to win a lottery or you intend to steal some money, but if you are not going to do that, just know that it is going to take you some time. That is why the best way you can get desperation out of the way is to get a job first.
What I am about to say is so simple that It doesn't even sound that deep but...,
“if you just don't lose, eventually you will wiin and if you just don't fall, eventually you will fly.”
It is so simple as an idea that it can even sound not so smart at all, but it is important. Therefore, if you are reading this article and you have nothing, get a job!
If you already have a job then think of a way of starting a business using the 80-20 principle that I have already talked about in one of my videos. If you already have a business, then think about a way to automate that business. And if you already have an automated business, then think of a way of learning everything you need to know about investing, or invest in your personal brand, because the ultimate goal of making money is to reach a point where you have investments making money for you. That is the ultimate goal of your financial life. This means to be in a position where it is your money that makes money for you. Or it is simply your brand that makes money for you and it is very important.
So, depending on where you find yourself, yes, getting a job could be bad for somebody who already has an automated business. Getting a job could be bad for somebody who is already running a business. Getting a job could be a bad advice for someone who, maybe, has been in a particular job for so long that they are not growing and they are not going forward. But for most people the best advice for them is to get a job as a means of getting desperation out of the way so that with time, they are able to fly, eventually.
